When I found writing, I did not expect the readership to widen beyond people. Code came later,1 and machines turned out to be the more discriminating audience, unmoved by a good sentence and merciless about a missing one.

Before any of that I came up through lithography and design into art direction, back when a page was still a physical object. Then a decade of building for the web, most of it spent arriving from different directions at the same conclusion: what breaks is usually structural, and structure is a design question before it is a technical one. These days I lead engineers, which in my experience is the same work at a different altitude.

When I’m not somewhere between a concept and its build, I’m either researching, wandering in the mountains, or ruminating on life with a proper cup of tea.
